What to consider when redecorating

Nappy Valley Net Design & Build 2018            Nappy Valley Net Design & Build 2018 Paint the Town Green - Things to consider when redecorating

Paint the Town Green had a few guest appearances in this year's Design & Build Guide, a highly useful annual publication from our friends @nappyvalleynet - an essential and inspirational guide for all homeowners, in particular those in South West London.

One of these features was Phil's advice box on what to consider when carrying out a redecoration project. It's one of those things that when pointed out makes spectacular common sense. So, on that basis, we deemed it too useful to not turn into a blog. We were restricted to 500 words for the magazine but here's the fully fledged version!

There is very little Paint the Town Green doesn't know about painting and decorating and we are only too happy to share our knowledge for the greater good and happiness of homes out there :)

TIming: Choose when it a suitable time to carry out the work. The room(s) you are having decorated are likely to be out of action while the work is carried out so not a good idea to paint the hallway/ kitchen during half term!

Cost: Does the woodwork in the room need painting? (skirtings, windows etc.) If not this will make the work much more straight forward and less costly. Does the ceiling need painting? Are you sure?! Painting a ceiling before the walls is much easier than painting it afterwards. Have a good look and be sure that you’ll be happy with the condition of your ceiling once the walls are freshly painted before work begins.

Nasty Fumes: If you’re likely to be sleeping in the room being painted soon afterwards, check the level of fumes that paint gives off. (These are measured in units called VOCs and details of this can be found on the side of most products) Otherwise you could wake up with a horrible headache!

Making Good: Is there anything else that you’re not happy with in the room? Before you decorate is the perfect time to make other changes such as adding a plug socket, moving a light switch or taking down a shelf. Often a large part of the cost associated with these things is not the new socket but the making good afterwards. So make those changes before you decorate and the making good can be done as part of the decoration.

Choosing your decorator: If having someone to carry out the work, choose your decorator wisely. Before you decide, find out:

  • Is he/ she insured?
  • What’s included in the costs? Many less expensive quotes won’t include paint.
  • Will they get the paint or are you expected to buy and deliver it?
  • How long will the work take?
  • Do you know how to find them if something goes wrong? An address or a landline phone number is a wise precaution.
