‘I’m going back to black’ crooned Amy Winehouse in her own distinctive way. But no-one foresaw this becoming quite the reality it has. It seems we really have come full circle as black looks to be big in homes and interiors this year.
Back to Black is the name of one of our paints on the original Paint the Town Green colour chart. Perhaps we should dig it out of the archives as we for one are excited about this emerging trend!
Grey has been big news for a while now and it looks like it is here to stay. Blue is an equally popular choice. Black however is not the obvious choice. However, although it feels like a bold choice, it isn’t that bold a change to make to your home. A dramatic dark can be surprisingly homely. A statement wall can make a fabulous back drop to art even.
The trends for next year are reflective of the moods of the nation. There is a sense that people are styling their homes to be more a place of retreat - an escape from the ever frenetic daily grind. Pastel hues are making their mark - millennial pink is still favoured. Greenery is still prevalent - from wall colour to plants through to natural materials. Black however is the quiet surprise. It is one that we are quite animated about though as we are certainly not ones to shy away from a bold choice of wall colour!
Black is surprisingly versatile. Its simplicity is underrated. Whether you choose to paint the whole room from skirting to ceiling or just under the dado rail or even just the one wall - for those thinking of revamping their home in the new year, we would urge you to at least consider this as an option to popular greys?
Check out our pinterest board for a whole host of ideas, selected by us, which show you how you can use black with great effect in the home. And even if black paint is just a step too far, why not consider black accessories instead as these can look just as good!
Here are a few pictures of a real home that we were in not so long ago. The industrial desk construction is an 11 year old’s bedroom. Less Kurt Bean (the non-communicative teenager "in the dark tunnel of adolescence" and older brother of Lauren Child’s delectable Clarice Bean) and more galactic-fantastic!!
We all love monochrome galleries in the home especially adorning walls alongside staircases. The back radiator in this picture grounds the display and gives this corner of the home more purpose.
If however you aren’t ready to peel yourself away from grey, then you can always accessorise to your heart’s content - from picture frames to quirky quote signs.
Maybe going back to black isn’t such a bad idea when it can be so much fun!
